The WWII Museum
Connected to the Route 66 museum is one of the most underrated WWII museums in Illinois. The exhibits are immersive, the artifacts are real, and the time-capsule 1940s rooms are fascinating to explore. But what makes this place truly unforgettable isn’t the objects—it’s the people.
Every soldier you see in the museum represents a real veteran, complete with their name, rank, and personal story. It feels less like a museum and more like walking through living history.
During our visit, we had the privilege of meeting David Estes—and it’s a moment we won’t forget. He walked us over to his favorite display in the room: his father, Sergeant Dal Estes. Dal served in the 29th Division, landed on D-Day, fought in the Battle of the Bulge, stole a German flag, and earned a Purple Heart. He also founded this museum.
David shared the stories behind other soldiers in the room as well as his own. That personal connection transformed the experience from interesting to deeply moving.

2. The Pontiac Swinging Bridges
Pontiac is home to three swinging bridges that cross the Vermilion River, with the oldest dating back to the late 1800s. All three are still functional and incredibly scenic—especially in the warmer months when the surrounding greenery is in full bloom.
