We used Shepler’s Ferry in Mackinaw City to transport with a wheelchair to Mackinac Island and everything was really quite easy.
Our Experience Boarding and Riding Shepler’s Ferry with a Wheelchair
When we arrived at Shepler’s Ferry, we pulled into a temporary parking spot to unload luggage so that staff could tag it and load it to go on the Ferry. I also let my mom (who is in a wheelchair) and my son out, so that they could wait there while I purchased tickets at the desk and then parked the car in the standard lot down the road. After I parked the shuttle brought me back where I met back up with my mom and son and got in line to board the ferry.

When it was our turn to get on the ferry, the wheelchair rolled right on via the ramp. My mom did have to stay in the back of the ferry and did not get a good view during the trip to Mackinac Island because they had to close the curtains to keep from getting splashed. My son and I found seats and staff stayed with my mom in the back and made sure the wheelchair was secured so it would not roll.
If I recall correctly, it took about a half an hour from the time of arrival to get the luggage unloaded, purchase tickets, use the restrooms, park the car and get in line. Then we were in line for around 15 minutes before boarding. I would recommend arriving about an hour earlier than you plan to depart.
Getting off of Shepler’s Ferry to Mackinac Island was very easy with the wheelchair. They let my mom get off first and she was able to roll right off. Then we found an attendant and told him that we were staying at the Bicycle Inn and our bags were delivered to our room. If you are taking a day trip to the island then you could just proceed to Main Street with easy access, as this docks right where all of the shops and things are located.

Parking at Shepler’s Ferry in Mackinaw City
If you are staying overnight, you can park super close for around $45/night or drive down the road to park in their nearby standard lot for only $20. If you choose the standard lot, they have a shuttle to bring you back that was quick and easy when I used it.
Day visitors can use a free lot and take the shuttle to the dock.
Check the Shepler’s Ferry site before your trip to confirm current costs for parking and tickets or to view the schedules for Mackinaw City and St. Ignace docks.
Handicap Bathroom at Shepler’s Ferry in Mackinaw City
There is a wheelchair accessible bathroom near the ticket booth at Shepler’s Ferry in Mackinaw City. This is a bathroom with several stalls and I believe one that is handicap accessible on the end. I did go in with my mom to assist, but did not go into the stall. She was able to close the door with the wheelchair inside the stall.
There may be a similar set-up from their St. Ignace dock also, but we used the dock in Mackinaw City.
