As someone who loves exploring and going on adventures as much as I can, it can be difficult to find the time I can take to get away. Sometimes I can’t go as far as I would like because there just isn’t enough time. So, because of this, I have become a big fan of day trips! Living in central Illinois I am lucky to have a few fun places I can go for a day, whether I want to explore the city and go to Chicago, or see some beautiful sights in the country.
Today I am going to take you to Starved Rock state park near Oglesby Illinois. I have been visiting starved rock to camp, hike and explore since I was a kid and there are still parts of it that I haven’t seen. There are around 13 miles of trails, most of which are fairly easy to hike. Starved Rock is known for its steep sandstone canyons that were formed by glacial meltwater. My favorites are obviously the ones with waterfalls, and you can find several here. St Louis, Wildcat, and French canyon all have beautiful waterfalls that are definitely worth the hike to see.

This state park is open year-round and I definitely recommend coming during each season. I have memories of going on a date when I was in high school with my then boyfriend to see the frozen waterfalls in the winter. In the fall, taking a drive around the park you can see all the leaves changing and as they fall you can see pretty far into the woods. You will almost certainly see deer and other wildlife and if you come around spring there’s a good chance you might see an eagle!
When you grow up hearing a place you visit so often with a name like “starved rock” you don’t really give it a second thought. It’s when you’re telling people who aren’t from around the area about it that it’s common to get questions about the name. So, I did a bit of research and I’ve heard stories through the years about how it came to be. The story goes that back in the 1700s the Illinois Indians were being attacked by northern tribes seeking revenge for the murder of their Chief. They were surrounded and unable to leave the rock so they eventually died of starvation. Hence the name, Starved Rock.
Along with beautiful hiking trails there are also lots of other options for activities in the area. You can go camping, rent some kayaks and go on a guided tour, fishing, horseback riding, and there are even river cruises you can go on! Even on a rainy cloudy day I find it very relaxing just taking a drive through Starved Rock. It’s unlike almost anything you will see in the area.
